Allergies

Allergies

Allergies : Basic Info You Need to Know What Is an Allergy? Allergic Reactions Allergy Symptoms Is It Anaphylaxis? What Is an Allergy? Airborne allergens, such as pollen, can be a major trigger for allergies. You get allergies when your immune system responds to substances such as pollen, pet dander, or certain foods. Your antibodies identify these allergens as bad for you, even though they’re not. How common are they? About 18 million grown-ups in the U.S. suffer from hay fever, or allergic rhinitis. At least one out of every three American adults and one out of every four kids have allergies. Doctors aren’t exactly sure how many grown-ups get diagnosed with allergies for the first time. But every year, more and more Americans deal with nasal allergies, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. No matter what, allergies are widespread, and they’re a big deal. They’re the sixth most common cause of long-lasting sickness in the U.S., as per the CDC. And they cost Americans over $18 billion annually. Allergic Reactions When you encounter something you’re allergic to, your body reacts by releasing substances like histamines into your bloodstream. This reaction triggers symptoms that can affect your skin, sinuses, or stomach. Some usual things that cause allergies are: Airborne stuff: Pollen, pet fur, dust mites, mold Certain foods: Like peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, eggs, and dairy Insect bites: From bees and wasps Medicines Latex Allergies – Symptoms Your allergy symptoms will vary, depending on what you’re allergic to and how you’re exposed. Allergens can enter your body in several ways: Through your nasal passages and into your lungs Through your mouth Through your skin Through absorption from an insect sting If you have a mild allergic reaction, common symptoms might be: Itchy, watery eyes Sneezing Itchy, runny nose Feeling tired or ill Rashes and hives Symptoms of a food allergy could include: Tingling in your mouth Swelling of your lips, tongue, face, or throat Hives Stomach cramps, vomiting, or diarrhea Anaphylaxis An allergic reaction to an insect sting might cause any of these: Swelling, redness, and pain at the site of the sting Itching or hives Chest discomfort or tightness Coughing Anaphylaxis A severe allergic reaction could produce problems such as: Belly pain Anxiety Chest tightness Coughing Diarrhea A hard time breathing or swallowing Dizziness Swelling of the face, eyes, or tongue Anaphylaxis If you have any of these severe symptoms, call your doctor or seek medical help right away. Some allergic reactions can be mild, while others can be very serious and even life-threatening, causing a condition called anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is when your whole body reacts severely to an allergen. It’s important to treat anaphylaxis quickly with a shot of epinephrine (also known as adrenaline), usually using an auto-injector.If you have an epinephrine auto-injector, use it right away and repeat the dose if your symptoms don’t improve after 5 to 15 minutes. Even if you start feeling better after using the injector, it’s crucial to seek medical help. Signs of anaphylaxis include: – Hives and itching all over your body – Trouble breathing, like wheezing or feeling short of breath – A tight or hoarse throat – Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat – Tingling sensations in your hands, feet, lips, or scalp If you experience any signs of anaphylaxis, call 911 immediately. Testing for Allergies An allergy test checks how your body reacts to certain things that might trigger allergies. If your immune system reacts strongly, it means you have an allergy. Your body makes special antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE) when it’s allergic to something. There are various types of allergy tests. The one your doctor chooses depends on what symptoms you have and what they suspect might be causing your allergies. Skin-prick or scratch test for allergies During a skin allergy test, your healthcare provider will use a small needle to prick your skin with allergens or place droplets of allergens on your skin and then gently scratch the surface. This is typically done on your forearm or back. If you’re allergic to any of the substances, you’ll likely develop a rash or raised spots called wheals within about 15 minutes. Sometimes, you might be tested for multiple allergies at once. Intradermal skin test If the skin-prick test doesn’t give enough information, your doctor might suggest another test. In this one, they inject a tiny amount of allergen into the outer layer of your skin. Then they’ll watch for any rash or reaction to see if you’re allergic to that substance. Patch test This test is for contact dermatitis, which occurs when your skin touches something you’re allergic to. Your healthcare provider will place drops of an allergen on your skin and cover it with a bandage, sometimes with the allergen on the bandage itself. You keep the bandage on for at least 2 days. When you return to the doctor, they’ll remove the bandage and look for any reaction on your skin. Blood test Your healthcare provider will take a blood sample from you and send it to a lab. In the lab, they’ll mix allergens with your blood and test it for levels of IgE antibodies. This test is called a blood allergy test. However, it’s important to note that this test can sometimes show false positives, meaning it might suggest you have an allergy when you actually don’t. Another type of test is called a challenge test. Usually, an allergist, who is a specialist in allergies, conducts this test. You’ll swallow a tiny bit of something you might be allergic to, like a food or medication, while a healthcare provider keeps a close eye on you in case you have a severe reaction like anaphylaxis. If that happens, you’ll receive a shot of epinephrine immediately to stop the reaction. Before the allergy test, you’ll need to stop taking your allergy medications for 3 to 7 days. These medications can affect the results of the test. Allergies and Your

Endometriosis Herbs

Endometriosis Meaning Endometriosis is a disease in which cells like those in the endometrium, the layer of tissue that normally covers the inside of the uterus, grow outside the uterus. It occurs in humans and a limited number of menstruating mammals. A major symptom of endometriosis is recurring pelvic pain. The pain can range from mild to severe cramping or stabbing pain that occurs on both sides of the pelvis, in the lower back and rectal area, and even down the legs. The amount of pain a person feels correlates weakly with the extent or stage (1 through 4) of endometriosis, with some individuals having little or no pain despite having extensive endometriosis or endometriosis with scarring, while others may have severe pain even though they have only a few small areas of endometriosis. The most severe pain is typically associated with menstruation. Pain can also start a week before a menstrual period, during and even a week after a menstrual period, or it can be constant. The pain can be debilitating and result in emotional stress. Symptoms of endometriosis-related pain may include: ‌There are multiple causes of pain. Endometriosis lesions react to hormonal stimulation and may “bleed” at the time of menstruation. The blood accumulates locally if it is not cleared shortly by the immune, circulatory, and lymphatic system. This may further lead to swelling, which triggers inflammation with the activation of cytokines, which results in pain. Another source of pain is the organ dislocation that arises from adhesion binding internal organs to each other. The ovaries, the uterus, the oviducts, the peritoneum, and the bladder can be bound together. Pain triggered in this way can last throughout the menstrual cycle, not just during menstrual periods. lso, endometriotic lesions can develop their own nerve supply, thereby creating a direct and two-way interaction between lesions and the central nervous system, potentially producing a variety of individual differences in pain that can, in some cases, become independent of the disease itself. Nerve fibres and blood vessels are thought to grow into endometriosis lesions by a process known as neuroangiogenesis. Infertility About a third of women with infertility have endometriosis. Among those with endometriosis, about 40% are infertile. The pathogenesis of infertility is dependent on the stage of disease: in early stage disease, it is hypothesized that this is secondary to an inflammatory response that impairs various aspects of conception, whereas in later stage disease distorted pelvic anatomy and adhesions contribute to impaired fertilization. Complications include internal scarring, adhesions, pelvic cysts, chocolate cysts of ovaries, ruptured cysts, and bowel and ureter obstruction resulting from pelvic adhesions. Endometriosis-associated infertility can be related to scar formation and anatomical distortions due to the endometriosis Common herbs for endometriosis Curcumin‌ Curcumin an active ingredient in turmeric, has anti-inflammatory effects. Some studies show that it may help regulate hormones, slow the growth of endometrial tissue, and soothe inflammation. However, more research is needed to see if curcumin can be used to help treat endometriosis. ‌ One study suggests that curcumin may reduce the production of estradiol (a type of estrogen), while another suggests that it may suppress tissue migration. Another review explored its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that may relieve symptoms. Pine Bark‌ for Endometriosis In 2014, one small study suggested that pine bark extract, when used alongside oral contraceptives, could reduce endometriosis pain. While participants taking oral contraceptives alone experienced a reduction in pain, the reduction was significantly greater in those who also took the pine bark extract Chamomile‌ According to one study, chrysin (a compound found in chamomile) suppressed and killed endometrial cells. However, it’s important to note that the study examined cells in a laboratory setting. Further research is required to determine the results in the human body. Peppermint‌ ‌Peppermint is known for its antioxidant properties, which may help ease endometriosis symptoms.‌ A 2016 study found that peppermint can reduce the severity of menstrual cramps. Although not proven to be associated with peppermint, one study found that antioxidant supplements can reduce pelvic pain from endometriosis.‌ Vitex Vitex, which comes from the flower of the chaste tree, has been used traditionally for a variety of gynecological issues. ‌ A 2016 review discussed several studies that suggested that the compound could treat menstrual irregularities and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). While its effects on endometriosis need further study, other research suggested that it may positively affect infertility in patients with endometriosis. Ashwagandha Ashwagandha is often used as a supplement to help reduce stress. Studies support this, showing that treatment with the herb can lead to a clinically significant reduction in stress.

Chamomilr Tea

chamomile tea advantage

Chamomile tea for Anti-inflammatory and antiphlogistic properties Chamomile tea- The flowers of chamomile contain 1–2% volatile oils including alpha-bisabolol, alpha-bisabolol oxides A & B, and matricin (usually converted to chamazulene and other flavonoids which possess anti-inflammatory and antiphlogistic properties. A study in human volunteers demonstrated that chamomile flavonoids and essential oils penetrate below the skin surface into the deeper skin layers. This is important for their use as topical antiphlogistic (anti-inflammatory) agents. One of chamomile’s anti-inflammatory activities involve the inhibition of LPS-induced prostaglandin E release and attenuation of cyclooxygenase (COX-2) enzyme activity without affecting the constitutive form. Chamomile Tea for Anticancer Activity Most studies on how chamomile tea inhibits tumor growth focus on apigenin, a key active ingredient in chamomile. Research on preclinical models of skin, prostate, breast, and ovarian cancer has shown promising results in slowing tumor growth. A recent study found that chamomile extracts had little effect on normal cells but significantly reduced the viability of various human cancer cells. Chamomile caused cancer cells to undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death) without affecting normal cells at similar doses. Additionally, a new compound called TBS-101, which includes chamomile among seven standardized botanical extracts, has shown a good safety profile and significant anticancer activity against androgen-resistant prostate cancer cells (PC-3), both in laboratory and animal studies. Chamomile Tea for Common Cold The common cold, also known as acute viral nasopharyngitis, is the most widespread human illness. It’s a mild viral infection affecting the upper respiratory system. While usually not dangerous, complications like pneumonia can be serious if not treated properly. Some studies suggest that inhaling steam with chamomile tea extract may help alleviate cold symptoms, but more research is needed to confirm this. Chamomile Tea for Cardiovascular Conditions Research suggests that regularly consuming flavonoids in food might lower the risk of dying from heart disease in older men. One study followed 805 men aged 65–84 for five years and found that higher flavonoid intake was linked to a lower risk of death from heart disease and fewer heart attacks. Another study looked at twelve heart disease patients who drank chamomile tea before undergoing heart tests. The tea slightly increased their mean brachial artery pressure, but no other major changes were noted. Most patients fell into a deep sleep shortly after drinking the tea. More large, well-designed studies are needed to determine chamomile’s potential benefits for heart health. Colic/Diarrhea conditions An apple pectin-chamomile mix might help make diarrhea in kids go away faster and ease the symptoms. Two studies looked at whether chamomile can help babies with colic. They mixed chamomile tea with other herbs and gave it to babies with colic. In one study, they gave the tea to some babies and a fake tea to others. After a week, the parents said the real tea helped 57% of the babies, while the fake tea helped only 26%. Another study gave chamomile and apple pectin to some kids with diarrhea and a fake treatment to others. The kids who got the real treatment got better faster (85%) than the others (58%). These studies show that chamomile can be safe and helpful for treating colic in babies. Gastrointestinal conditions Chamomile tea has been used for a long time to treat many stomach and intestine problems like upset stomach, gas, ulcers, and stomach cramps. It’s good at getting rid of gas, calming the stomach, and relaxing the muscles that push food through your belly. There’s a mix called STW5 that has chamomile in it along with other plants like lemon balm and peppermint. It’s been shown to protect against getting ulcers in the stomach. This mix works by reducing how much acid your stomach makes, increasing protective mucus, and changing some chemicals in the stomach. It’s even better at stopping too much acid than regular antacids.
